  | FUEL CONSUMPTION & OPERATION COSTS
Ships of the size and age we have been looking for are not expensive compared to new vessels..... it is possible to buy a steel vessel between 100tons & 250 tons for about $250k to $500k if it is old enough. The real cost of ownership is the constant maintenance and refurbishing of a steel hull and old machinery PLUS the fuel cost to operate a ship. This last cost has recently become one of the most important.
Lautan Megah is a very fuel efficient small ship. She burns 60 ltrs per hr compared to 450 ltrs per hr on the Batavia (the ship we chartered). The Batavia cost us $2,500 per day to charter. We can purchase Lautan Megah and completely refurbish her for just 3 months of Batavia's charter fees. Running and maintenance costs will be far lower than for any ship we have inspected to date. We calculate fuel use at only 1.7 tons per day.
We can travel 8 times further for every donor dollar.

  | Lautan Megah's fuel efficiency reflects Islands Aid's commitment to minimizing our carbon footprint. In an emergency Lautan Megah is easily capable of safely carrying up to 200 passengers. Carrying 150 passengers (seated) the vessel achieves a passenger mpg rating of 95. This compares to a ratings for other vehicles and aircraft of:
  | 45 pmpg for the A380 carrying 450 passengers (the worlds most fuel efficient airliner)
  | 164 pmpg for a Prios with 4 passengers (the worlds most fuel efficient car) or
  | 60 pmpg for a modern SUV with 4 passengers.
  | 30-50 pmpg for most Mentawai charter boats.

  | MECHANICAL HERITAGE All machinery aboard is heavy duty from Japans most reputable engine builder, Yanmar. The engine is direct coupled to the prop shaft via a clutch and there is no gearbox. A variable pitch propellor is used to provide forward or reverse thrust. It can be fine tuned to suit the load and sea conditions for maximum efficiency. Steering is electrohydraulic with manual hydraulic emergency back up.

  | VESSEL HISTORY The 100 ton vessel was built in Japan in 78 and is GRP construction. Lautan Mega was launched as the "Wakamana", a Government fisheries research vessel. She was sold in the early '90s to a Japanese corporation and modified for salvage exploration. In 2002 she was sold to Indonesian owners. They have failed to find a commercially viable use for the ship. In 2004 the state owned oil company, Pertamina, chartered the vessel for 3 months for survey work. In 2007 the renamed Lautan Megah was used as an inter-island ferry for 2 months but proved too slow to attract custom. A French expatriate signed up to buy the vessel but he was unable to complete the purchase contract and offered the ship to Island Aid.
