Padang is the capital of West Sumatra (3 million population) and the biggest city (750,000 population) on the entire West coast of Sumatra island.

Currently all Mentawai charter boats depart from Padang and return to Padang using Muara Padang (above) river, Teluk Nibung 15 min. south or Teluk Bungus 25 min. south.

By the end of 2004 the Rokot airport in North Sipura will be re-opened to 12 seat aircraft and we anticipate being able to arrange for you to meet your charter boat in the Mentawais. Ferry transport is low cost but unreliable and very  basic. A new fast ferry operates on calm days but if the wind picks up the boat slows down to 10 knots. The islands are 75-130 nm from the mainland so we recommend the overnight live-aboard option as the safest and most comfortable for now.

There are 3 daily flights to Medan & 10 daily flights to Jakarta commencing 6am with last flight about 6pm.

Friday, Saturday, Wednesday and Monday there are direct flights to Singapore either with Garuda or Silk Air.

3 days a week there are flights to Batam.

4 days a week there are direct flights to KL in Malaysia

Schedules change with demand so please check with your travel agent for the best price and a time to fit your charter trip.

A new international airport will be opened in 2005 and many more direct flights are expected.
