eLamb

EL at Nipussie

YOUR SURF THERAPY BASE IN THE MENTAWAI

After 8 years under construction, the "Electric Lamb" was launched in Fremantle in January 1981. She headed North in June '81 and has been cruising around Indonesia ever since. The eLamb has travelled from Ambon in the East to Singapore and visited a lot of amazing places between.

eLamb has covered well over 200,000 nm since her arrival in Indonesia.

In 1982, eLamb won her class in the  Darwin to Ambon International Yacht race setting a mono-hull record of 84 hrs that stood for over 8 years. Best days run (24hrs) was 252nm under sail.

Rick later released the secret behind her amazing performance in her first race..... beer ballast!

She was carrying the race committee's stash of kegs for the post race party all stowed under the starboard bunks. The wind blew hard from the SE for almost the entire race and EL astounded race officials by finishing only 1hr 13 minutes behind a 50ft crowther racing cat "Wimbral".

Electric Lamb pioneered surf breaks in Sumba '81, Lombok '82, South coast Java '82, Panaitan '83 and Sumatra '93

A true surf vet among cruising yachts. These days the sails are more a back-up and her rig has been modified to better suit her charter boat role. She is one of the most fuel efficient boats in the Mentawais.

eTeam

The legendary Capt Tanuir and his team have developed a sixth sense when it comes to  being on the surf and on the fish. They can read the fickle Menatawai weather to perfection and Capt Tanuir goes out of his way to maximize your surf time without compromising safety or comfort.

Yan has been with the "Lamb" for over 2 years and he takes care of service and guest relations. Edi and Iwan cook up a storm and keep the tender close to the break for photos and a helping hand when you feel the need.

The team enjoy letting the guests feel like they are in charge of the ship  but they just as smoothly take control if your call is not 100% right in their judgement. Surf forcasts are updated daily by sat phone and you can call home 24/7. Sorry, no fax or e-mail.... you are on holidays, right?

No surf hungry egos on this boat. The crew are there to get you waves.

Sail + Power =
Speed = Comfort = Stability = Safety

Speed is important and the new 85hp main engine is matched to a new 3:1 gearbox, new shaft, beefed up Y bracket and huge 24" 4 bladed prop. This gives eLamb a lot of grunt when sea conditions get ugly and that is often more important that theoretical top speed.

On a calm day eLamb can cruise at 8.5knots (15km/hr) and sprint at over 9knots (17km/hr) under engine alone. eLamb is by far the most fuel efficient surf charter boat in the Mentawais. Fuel efficiency means you dont waste time in ports re-filling tanks when you could be surfing.

eDeck

Surfers who have visited the Mentawais understand that 75% of the trip is spent anchored near the breaks. No one can surf all day and a lot of time is spent on deck watching friends surf, shooting video, enjoying meals, or just reading a book. Shade is critical and we have gone to a lot of trouble to make the eLambs deck saloon the best in the fleet. Aircon compressors have been moved forward near the mast to minimize noise and heat and there is now walk thru access to the new swim platform aft. Boards that are not in use are stowed under the slatted comfortable deck seating. You get maximum breeze and heaps of space plus the luxurious feel of laid teak deck under foot.

eDeck

The canopy is engineered with insulation and a layer of GRP to stop heat transmission and perimeter gutters collect rainwater to keep the tanks topped up for the duration of your trip. The Fishing zone at the stern is enlarged and you can sit comfortably on the raised hatch covers in the shade while waiting for a strike. Bring your boat rod, we have plenty of rod holders. The canopy is just the right length so that you can stand and fight a big fish without limiting the movement of the rod. The skipper has an unrestricted view from the helm so he can keep the fish behind the boat and not under it.

All decks forward of the wheel house are covered in rubber chip non-skid for supreme security and safely. The enormous foredeck is shaded at anchorage for your comfort and there is plenty of room for board prep, stowage and repairs. The eLamb boasts lots of freeboard so decks stay dry under most sea conditions.

Recovery

Mentawai surf is so perfect so often that it is almost inevitable that you will get too much sun. It is critical to find a seriously cool space where you can relax and recover. The best solution possible is an airconditioned saloon with all round views so you can watch your mates surf or just watch a video. The saloon and below decks area are sealed off from mosquitos for your protection.

Recovery Bay

Now that the helm has moved up to deck level the saloon on eLamb makes the perfect recovery bay. Unbeatable for those rainy nights when the deck feels a bit too exposed. Multi plugs are always available for recharging your camera gear. There is a CD/VCD  player, 15" Sony TV, Stereo and an Ericson 190 satellite phone for calls home or for surf reports on demand.

Meals

The crew are up at dawn preparing a big breakfast down below while you get out there with the dawn watch. Bottled mineral water is always on hand right where you need it. Hot water is always available for self serve tea and coffee.

Iwan are both qualified hotel chefs and they understand what surfers want. A wide range of Western meals are complemented by some of West Sumatra's most delicious traditional dishes. Pili's BBQ'd fish is legendary and fresh seafood is always served at least once a day. If we hook up a big tuna sashimi will be on the table for lunch or dinner. Lobster and mud crab are on the menu when ever we can purchase them fresh from coastal villages. Fresh fruit is a priority. Meals will be served on deck or in the air conditioned saloon depending on the weather conditions at the time.

Power

Every item in the engine room and drive chain has been replaced. Tanks have been re-finished, the main engine now has 65% more power and the gear box is a heavy duty 3:1 unit widely used in the local fishing fleet. All critical parts are carried aboard:

- Spare starter motor
- Spare alternator
- Spare injectors and fuel lines

The new engine/gearbox configuration is very popular in Sumatra and parts are readily available. A mechanic is on standby 24/7 for dispatch to the boat should any running repairs be required.

eRoom

The engine drives one 24v alternator for the 2 x 120ah starting batteries and a 12v alternator for the 120ah ships battery.

A 6.5KVA Vetus generator powers all AC needs at 220v 50Hz single phase. An exhaust blower changes the engine room air every 10 seconds and keeps the space at negative pressure relative to the rest of the boat. This minimises noise and fumes while under way.

eDuck

There is no stronger safer tender than our eDuck. Australian built from 4mm marine grade alloy, this huge 3.5m (12ft) beast is incredibly stable and if necessary she can carry all the surfers on board. She is powered by a 15hp Yamaha "enduro" outboard.

eDuck

Our attentive crew will run you out to the surf or rescue you if you loose your board. Get in close and video your mates surfing or head out with Capt Pili and try your luck hooking up with some game fish. The eDuck double as a superb lifeboat with unsinkable construction and unrivalled stability.
