Please make sure you are covered by travel and medical insurance. Don’t assume that your credit card’s built in cover will help much. Best arrange dedicated medivac insurance with your travel consultant or check for the best deals on-line. We cannot take responsibility for the cost of your medical bills and charter flights if you are injured or sick but we can arrange everything so that you reach a hospital of your choice.

Our speedboats will run you the 15 miles up the coast to Rokot airport and we can arrange a charter flight with SMA at short notice.

The resort speedboats are modern PE designs that double as aid support landing boats. Powered by either one or two 40hp outboards, these double skin boats are incredibly tough and safe. Air chambers between the inner and outer skins provide floatation and even fully flooded the boat remains stable. These boats have passed ISO standards and Lloyds Insurance certification for 8 persons.

Most of the Mentawais are still raw and pristine but along with this natural beauty comes some risk from mosquito borne diseases. Please make sure you bring long light cotton wear for mornings and evenings or for cloudy days. The resort grounds are fogged to reduce mosquito numbers but we recommend that you cover up or use a strong insect repellent when we dont have full sun or on days when the wind is light.

Always wear sneakers or booties when reef walking. Stone fish, sting rays, urchins and Lion Fish can be found in the rock pools so try to stay on dry reef so you dont step on these interesting but well protected animals. Reef cuts can turn nasty so wash them with soap and water immediately after they happen. Make sure that any cuts or scratches are clean and covered and always travel with some strong antibiotics to use if infections wont respond.

A few general tips:
To combat dehydration and exhaustion, limit your surfing time to mornings  and afternoons and cloudy days, stay out of the midday sun, stretch, sleep, drink a lot of water and eat plenty of the available carbohydrates -- rice, noodles and vegetables.
  1. Don't drink tap water, either onboard or in any hotel. Stick to bottled water for drinking and brushing teeth, or be prepared to suffer the runs.
  2. Don't be embarrassed by seasickness. If you've never been on a boat in rough water, let us tell you: Real Manhood has nothing to do with it.  Just be smart and take Dramamine during a rough crossing and save yourself a lot of punishment.
  3. To make sure you score epic surf it is safest to plan to stay between 10 and 14 days -- Take some good books. A good attitude will help preserve your mental and physical health.

Tsunami Escape Plan

tsunami-wave
Dramatic image from Thailand Dec 26 2004. Mom ran out to warn the kids and they all made it safely to high ground. If you see the ocean recede DO NOT wander out onto the sand to pick up fish! Just run to high ground and wait till the wave passes.

Several NGOs are active in the villages near HTs Surf Resort and tsunami escape paths are being upgraded and improved. There is a 50 m high hill located NW of the resort about 350m from the dinning room. There is a map in each room along with a torch and drinking water in bottles. If you feel a strong earthquake, grab the torch and water and some clothing and leave the villa quickly. The staff will guide you to the hill but most guests take the time to check the path out so they can find it in the dark. It only takes a few minutes so ask the staff to show you the way. Remember the saying... “there are no natural disasters, only human disasters” and be prepared in case nature decides to make some adjustments to the earth’s crust during your stay.
